Lady Liberty

“Be it known that I, Auguste Bartholdi, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have originated and produced a Design of a Monumental Statue representing ‘Liberty enlightening the world,’ being intended as a commemorative monument of the independence of the United States.”

On this day in 1879, patent number USD11023 was issued to Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of “Liberty Enlightening the World,” now widely known as the Statue of Liberty. Although the patent expired fourteen years later, #LadyLiberty continues to inspire from her place in New York Harbor.
