Webinar on filing patent applications electronically using DOCX

Join us for a Patent Quality Chat webinar on September 24, from noon to 1 p.m. ET. During this online-only webinar, we’ll discuss filing structured text (DOCX) as an efficient way to file a patent application electronically. You’ll learn what structured text is and how you can use it to file nonprovisional utility applications.

USPTO Patent Quality Chat webinar series of 2018 continues on Nov. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. ET, with “eMod Update: Accessing EFS-Web and PAIR with USPTO.gov Accounts.”

We will discuss how to access EFS-Web and PAIR with USPTO.gov accounts, with a focus on:

• The authentication change from using PKI certificates to using USPTO.gov accounts;
• How to migrate your existing PKI certificate to your USPTO.gov account; and
• The Sponsorship Tool, which allows existing registered practitioners to sponsor their support staff to work on their behalf.

The USPTO Deputy Commissioner for Patent Examination Policy Bob Bahr will discuss the USPTO’s recently-issued memorandum implementing changes to examination procedure in view of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decision in Berkheimer v. Officials from USPTO’s International Work Sharing Planning and Implementation Division of the Office of International Patent Cooperation will be discussing our expanded Collaborative Search Pilot (CSP). CSP provides those cross-filing their patent applications internationally with search results from multiple offices early in the examination process. During this chat, you will learn how to leverage CSP to strengthen your intellectual property internationally.

The USPTO’s eCommerce Modernization (eMod) team will discuss:

• new structured text features
• file structured text via the electronic filing system (EFS-Web) 
• access structured text submissions, structured text office actions, and XML downloads using the Private Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) system  

Additionally, the eMod team will share information about the upcoming Patent Center Beta Release for participants to use the new Patent Center tool (to replace EFS-Web and PAIR), and provide feedback for further improvements. The USPTO’s Patent Quality Chat webinar series kicks off 2018 on Tuesday, Jan. 9, from noon – 1 p.m. ET to discuss “Unlocking Open Data for our Patent Customers."

We recently released our most comprehensive dataset of over 4.4 million office actions onto our Open Data Portal. USPTO data experts will discuss how you can leverage this data in bulk or by using new application program interfaces (APIs) that focus on citations used by examiners to reject claims using prior art and particular types of rejections used by examiners, such as rejections under 35 U.S.C. 101 or 35 U.S.C. 103.

The USPTO’s Patent Quality Chat webinar series continues Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. – noon ET to discuss “Examiners Provide Their Views on Prepared Applications.”

In a recent application readiness survey, we polled examiners to investigate patent application attributes that enhance the ability of examiners to efficiently and effectively do their job. Particular features in filed specifications, claims, and Information Disclosure Statement (IDS) documents were considered. Examiners across disciplines and experience levels commented on how these features helped or hindered their review of patent applications. 

Application readiness experts will discuss the survey results on Oct. 12. Share your ideas about how the USPTO can help you improve the quality of incoming patent applications. We look forward to hearing your feedback.
